About the Shoe Size Converter
Why shoe sizes differ
Shoe sizing systems evolved independently in different countries. EU sizes are based on the length of the last in Paris points (⅔ cm). US and UK sizes use different scales for men and women. Japanese sizes are in centimetres.
How to use it
Select your gender, enter your known size in any system, and all other equivalents appear instantly.
- EU — used across Europe; same scale for men and women
- US Men / US Women — women's sizes run about 1.5 sizes higher than men's for the same foot
- UK — similar to US men's but runs about 0.5 sizes smaller
- CM (Japan) — foot length in centimetres; the most precise system
Why shoe sizing varies so much between brands
Unlike clothing, shoe sizing has a more direct relationship to foot measurements, but brand lasts (the physical forms used to construct shoes) vary significantly. A UK size 9 in a wide-last trainer may feel like a 9.5 in a narrow-last dress shoe. Foot width is as important as length: most brands offer standard and wide fits, but few offer narrow fits.
- Measure your foot — trace your foot on paper, measure length from heel to longest toe in cm
- UK size formula — foot length in inches minus 8.67, multiplied by 3: a 26cm foot = 10.24 inches, size = (10.24 - 8.67) x 3 = 4.7, UK size 4.5-5
- Width fitting — D or M is standard; E or W is wide; 2E or XW is extra wide; B or N is narrow
- Try before buying — foot size changes with age, weight, and time of day (feet swell during the day); always try shoes on in the afternoon
