About the Clothes Size Converter
Why do clothing sizes differ?
Clothing sizes evolved independently in different countries and are based on different body measurement standards. There is no universal sizing system, which is why a size 12 from one country may not match a size 12 from another.
How to use this converter
Select a garment category (women's tops, bottoms, men's tops, or shoes), then find your known size in one region's column and read across to find the equivalent in other regions.
- Women's tops — US, UK, EU, and AU sizes
- Women's bottoms — waist-based sizing across regions
- Men's tops — chest-based sizing across regions
- Shoes — EU, US, UK, and CM conversions
Getting an accurate fit when shopping online
International size labels are unreliable for predicting fit. Brands differ significantly even within the same country. The most reliable method is to measure your chest, waist, and hips in centimetres and compare directly to each brand's size guide, which is usually in the product pages.
- Chest — measure around the fullest part of the chest, keeping the tape horizontal
- Waist — measure at the narrowest point, usually about 2 cm above the navel
- Hips — measure around the fullest part, usually 20 cm below the waist
- Inside leg — for trousers, measure from crotch to ankle on the inside of the leg; UK standard is 30, 32, or 34 inches
