About the Age Calculator

Our free age calculator gives you a precise breakdown of your age — not just the year, but the exact number of years, months, and days since you were born. It also tells you how many days you have been alive in total, and counts down the days to your next birthday.

How age calculation works

Age is calculated by subtracting your birth date from today's date. The tricky part is handling months of different lengths (28–31 days) and leap years. Our calculator handles all of this automatically using your local calendar system.

Why knowing your exact age matters

Exact age is required for many legal and medical purposes — passport applications, insurance forms, medical screening eligibility, and retirement planning all rely on precise age in years and months. Our tool gives you the exact figure in seconds.

Tips for using the calculator

What age calculations are used for

Precise age in years, months, and days matters more than you might think. Insurance premiums change on the birthday. Medical reference ranges (BMI, blood pressure, cholesterol) use age bands. Legal thresholds (retirement age, pension access, driving licence, alcohol purchase) apply on the exact birthday. Race categories in running and cycling change on 1 January each year based on age at year-end.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is my exact age calculated?
Your age is calculated by comparing your date of birth with today's date. We count the full years first, then remaining months, then remaining days — accounting for different month lengths and leap years.
What is the most accurate way to calculate age?
The most accurate method accounts for leap years and variable month lengths. Our calculator does this automatically, giving you years, months, and remaining days.
How many days have I been alive?
Simply enter your date of birth and our calculator instantly shows the total number of days you have lived, updated to today's date.
Can I calculate age for a future date?
This calculator works up to today's date. For future or historical date differences, use our Date Difference Calculator.
How is age calculated on a leap year birthday?
If you were born on 29 February (a leap year), your legal birthday in non-leap years depends on jurisdiction. In England and Wales, the legal birthday in non-leap years is 1 March. For official purposes (driving licence, state pension, alcohol purchase) the 1 March date applies. This calculator treats 28 February as the birthday in non-leap years.
What is the difference between age in complete years vs fractional age?
Complete years (how we normally state age) counts only full years elapsed: someone born on 15 June 2000 is 24 years old until 15 June 2025. Fractional age (used in actuarial science and some medical contexts) expresses age as a decimal: on 15 December 2024 the same person is 24.5 years old. This calculator shows both complete years and the precise breakdown in months and days.
